To whom it may concern:

Mr BALKRISHNA  TAMANG has acted as our sardar during our rigorous trek to the KYANGUINGOM base camp during the month of October 1992.
We never had any problems throughout the entire 7 days expedition. In fact, our trip was flawless. We always ate very well and our tent or accommodations were handled perfectly. Ram knows how to lead his porters direct his cooks and always interacts with us to suit our every need. He is always in good spirits and makes the best out of every situation.

I highly recommend hiring CHAYNGBA for his experience and ability to take care of his clients.

Sincerely,

FABIO MOREIRA SKVEIRA,
BRASIL.

This is letter of recommendation for BALKRISHNA TAMANG who served as our guide on a 15 day trek in the Annapurna region. We found him to be a really first-rate guide, caring and protective, very versatile, friendly and Cheerful, knowledgeable about the area with a good command of English. He has worked at all levels of trekking including that of cook, as we learned to our pleasure one evening at a lodge when Chayngba offered to cook us dinner: he produced the best meal of our trek ! His gregariousness  and friendly relations with the Nepalis we met was a bonus in drawing us into Nepali life. His skill as a guide most come out one day when we left the trail without consulting him. He had to rescue us from a most difficult situation checking out steps in a cliff side, guiding us across a turbulent river. We shall always be grateful for his skills on this harrowing day and for his excellent job on the entire trek.

To you, who would like to go trekking:
Balkrishna  Tamang picked us up at Dubar Square KTM, and brought us to his office, which also is his apartment. It’s not in the tourist area, but that is nothing to be afraid of. They look very polite, and they really are.

About Balkrishna  Tamang:
He was our guide, a very kind and helpful one. Bal  will do everything so you can be comfortable with your trekking. He leads his crew in a way that we felt like king. They are very open minded and we don’t think anything unexpected will appear, became he thinks of everything.
He has been guiding for many years.

About the Timal trek:
It’s an easy but beautiful trek. Some places you can see the Himalayas, and others you can take a swim in Busikola or Sunkosi: The best thing was that there were no tourists in the area. Which means that the villages are there for the farming and not for the tourism.

The food:
It is property done with cleaning and boiling or frying, and it is absolutely outstanding.

We have just been on a 10 day trek around Annapurna Area with Balkrishna Tamang and we can testify that he is an excellent guide: honest, helpful kind – a real sweetie ! We have had a brillant time which was much enhanced by having Chayngba as a guide and we would have no restriction in recommending him to anyone.

13 February 1995 – UK, USA - 16 day Annapurna trek

BALKRISHNA  TAMANG was our guide on an attempt to do the Annapurna circuit. He was very pleasant throughout the trip often making jokes and always smiling. He helped carry some of our stuff when certain situations became too demanding per us; and was always the first to offer his assistance, we never had to ask.
He explained some things along the way and helped us to understand about the Nepali and Tibetan culture. He taught us some Nepali words that helped us met and understand the locals. We attest to the fact that he always know the way and did not get lost and all in all was a helpful fellow.

BAL was all of the above and more. Our trip was difficult because of the weather and the fact that we were not in the best of shape at times we were hard on Chayngba, but he was always kind, helpful and honest. I would hope he is the same to you.

4 February 1998 – NORWAY

We, two Norwegians in our mid twenties, used BAL  as a guide during 7 days Helambu trek in mid January 1998.

We can highly recommend using BAL  as your guide, whether you’re trekking in Helanbu, Langtang or Annapurna (he is done all these routes a number of times). He is friendly, has a good sense of humour and most important: he is absolutely trustworthy. BAL speak English well, and he is been a guide for over 6 years.

BAL  knows all the villages you will be passing through and even better: he knows the people running the guesthouses in which you will stay. This makes the evening an unforgettable experience.
If you wonder about the price, I can assure you that you will not spend more than using other guides. Good luck !

April 1999 – USA

BALKRISHNA  Tamang was our guide for a 13 day trek in the Langtang valley in mid April 1999. Chayngba knew the trails very well and stayed close to us, ensuring we didn’t take a wrong turn. He was knowledgeable about the mountains, the vegetation, and the animals we saw along the way and he was always happy to answer our questions. Chayngba was friendly with many of the tea-house owners and while he was always able to pick a good place to stay, he was happy to let us make the final decisions.

BALKRISHNA is friendly and kind. He offers to carry our  packs when the trials got steep and was always ready for a game of cards at the end of the day. In short, we would recommend Chayngba as a guide for any trek.

5 August 1999 – SOUTH AFRICA

Ii have recently been trekking up to the Gosaikund lakes in Langtang National Park with BAL as my guide. I have to make the strongest recommendation with regard to his capabilities as a guide and as a reliable person. He is prepared to help beyond all expectations and went so far as to help me with organising activities that did not pertain to trekking. He is always prepared to help and often offered to help carry my pack when I puffed my weary way up the steep passes. I valued his company all the time: he has a great sense of humour and picks up card games really quickly (and ends up beating you at your own game) !
When returning to Nepal I will not use other guide. Although we only used teahouses whilst trekking he is able to organise camping, porters, transport, food, trekking permits and all other details that need to be arranged.
I hope that you make use of his range of abilities and that you too find him indispensable.

25 November 1999 – HOLLAND

To all suspicious tourist and those who think they can manage without a guide: BAL is absolutely alright and he can give your trekking an extra dimension if you let him take car of you. Of course you can go trekking without a guide, but you will be more like an outsider then. If you want to take part in the Nepalese family life and have a taste of typical Nepalese food and drinks, then you should hire a guide and BAL  makes a very good choice.
He is absolutely worth his price and if you really think that you should be bargaining, then you should realise that most of the guides have to earn one year’s salary in just a few months !
I did the Helambu trekking together with BAL and although I didn’t consider it an easy trek, it was absolutely worth it. Even when i got sick, shivering all over from ever ! Chayngba was taking care all the time, sitting next to my bed, providing me with Lemon tea and biscuits. And as my muscles failed, he gave me this harsh but very efficient massage ! (He is really good at that !). I could go on and on with this recommendation which I won’t do. Just believe me and all the others in this book : BAL is okay !

17 December 1999 – AUSTRALIA

To whom it may concern

I Bill Phillips, an Australian on holidays in Nepal met BAL  in KTM Dubar Square. After meeting him I had a strong sense he was honest and I could trust him.
We completed a 14 day trek in the Langtang valley and over the Gosinkunde pass with BAL  as guide. He was always able to give information when I wanted it, tell me how far we had to go or what the terrain ahead was like. He has completed this route 25 times so is very experienced.
Most importantly I felt very at ease with BAL  he has a very good sense of humour and we did become friends.
I take a sentence from another letter in his collection. “We started the trek as guide and client but finished as two friends". I found this statement very true.
I would only be to happy to recommend BAL  to any future trekkers.
